Acid Reflux + Sore Throat, Common Causes, Symptoms And Treatment

Acid reflux is such a common problem you'd think it would be simple to spot and treat.
But sometimes acid reflux symptoms are less than obvious or easy to mistake for something else. If left untreated, heartburn can lead to Barrett's esophagus, which is a precursor to cancer, says Timothy Pfanner, MD, assistant professor of internal medicine at Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine, in College Station.

In addition, Acid reflux happens when stomach acids travel back up into the food pipe, or esophagus, irritating its lining.
This irritation can lead to a sore throat , a dry cough, and wheezing.
It can also cause heartburn, a bitter taste in the mouth, regurgitation, indigestion, and difficulty swallowing.

6 Common Causes Of Acid Reflux

1. Pregnancy
2. Eating large meals or lying down right after a meal
3. Overweight or obesity
4. Lying on your back or bending over at the waist, after a heavy meal.
5. Smoking
6. Foods such as citrus, tomato, chocolate , mint, garlic, onions, or spicy or fatty foods and drinks like alcohol, carbonated drinks, coffee, or tea.

Symptoms of Acid Reflux

◾ Pain worsens at rest
The acid that is supposed to stay in your stomach is more likely to escape into your esophagus when you lie down or bend over, causing heartburn.
◾ Chest pain
Chest pain, which occurs because stomach acid is splashing into the esophagus, is a classic acid reflux symptom. But the pain can last longer and be more intense than expected.
◾Bloody or black stools or bloody vomiting
◾Wheezing , dry cough , hoarseness, or chronic sore
◾Regurgitation: a sour or bitter-tasting acid backing up into your throat or mouth
◾Asthma : The coughing and wheezing from heartburn can get so bad they could become triggers for asthma.
◾Trouble swallowing: Over time, the continuous cycle of damage and healing after acid reflux causes scarring.

Treatment For Acid Reflux

In many cases, lifestyle changes combined with over-the-counter medications are all you need to control the symptoms of acid reflux disease.
Antacids, such as Alka-Seltzer, Maalox ,
Mylanta, Rolaids , or Riopan, can neutralize the acid from your stomach. But they may cause diarrhea or constipation , especially if you overuse them. It's best to use antacids that contain both magnesium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide. When combined, they may help counteract these gastrointestinal side effects. You can also try other things such as :
◾Eating small, frequent meals rather than heavy meals
◾Avoiding acidic, spicy, and fatty foods
◾Avoiding carbonated, caffeinated, or alcoholic drinks
◾If you're overweight or obese, take steps to lose weight with exercise and diet changes.
◾Don't eat at least 2 to 3 hours before lying down.
◾Don't wear tight clothes or tight belts.
